Over the years, Elton John has had many close encounters with death.
The artist who has won five Grammys and celebrated 34 years of being sober in July 2024 had a scary moment back in 2013. He had appendicitis but still went on with his European tour, even though he was in a lot of pain.
“I was a ticking time bomb. I guess I could have died at any time,” the now 77-year-old singer said.
After having surgery for prostate cancer in 2017, he faced serious complications that put his life at risk.
John, who was 72 at the time, shared his scary experience, saying, “I had no idea how near I was to dying. I was really sick and kept thinking, ‘I just want to get better so I can see my kids.’ There were tubes everywhere on me, and it took a whole seven weeks to feel better after I got home.”
John shared on his social media that he had to delay his 2021 European tour to 2023 because he hurt his hip.
I’m really sad to say that I have to move the dates for my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and the U.K. from 2021 to 2023, the father of two says.
Right before my summer vacation ended, I took a bad fall on a hard surface, and now my hip really hurts a lot. I’ve been feeling a lot of pain and discomfort ever since. The doctors say I should get surgery soon so I can heal properly and avoid any problems in the future.

In his post from September 16, 2021, he expresses gratitude to his fans and says, “I’m really sorry for making you wait. I totally understand how frustrating this has been after everything we’ve gone through this year.”
Limited vision
On September 3, 2024, the singer known as “Rocket Man” posted on social media to tell his 8 million fans that he is dealing with a “severe eye infection” that has really affected his eyesight.
This summer, I’ve been struggling with a really bad eye infection that has made it hard for me to see out of one eye. I’m getting better, but it’s taking a long time, and I still have to wait a while before my vision comes back in that eye, says the person who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.
He mentions that he’s “calmly recovering at home” and feels “hopeful about how things are going.”
